Deutsche Bank puts crypto custody launch weeks away

Deutsche Bank says it is weeks away from launching crypto custody in Germany, with plans to take the service to Asian financial centres next year. Gerald Podobnik, co-head of the bank’s corporate bank, described the rollout in an interview reported by Reuters on October 16. The launch is planned; the report does not say the service is already available to clients.

The sequence matters: Deutsche Bank intends to begin by holding major cryptocurrencies, then add services for moving money into and out of mainstream stablecoins. Podobnik framed these as blockchain services alongside the bank’s existing financial products, rather than replacements for them.

Which assets come first, and what follows?

Bitcoin and ether are the initial custody assets named in the Reuters report. The next phase is expected to help clients move money into and out of mainstream stablecoins. The report does not identify those stablecoins or explain whether the later service will use bank transfers, on-chain transfers, or both.

That distinction separates safekeeping from payment movement. Custody concerns holding clients’ crypto-assets; the later stablecoin service would support movement between money and stablecoins. Deutsche Bank has described the order of those phases, but has not disclosed the settlement path, supported networks, transaction controls or how it would handle a failed or delayed transfer.

Podobnik cited the digital economy’s growth, including hundreds of billions of dollars held in stablecoins, as evidence of new pools of value. That figure is his broad description of the market, not a forecast of Deutsche Bank’s deposits, custody balances or revenue.

When does the bank plan to enter Asian markets?

Deutsche Bank plans to expand the custody platform into Asian financial centres next year, after its German launch, Podobnik told Reuters. He did not name the centres, set out a country-by-country sequence or give a launch date. The reported plan therefore establishes the intended direction and timing, but not which local markets will be served first.

Podobnik linked the move to Deutsche Bank’s broader corporate banking strategy: the bank aims for compound annual growth of 8% in that business by 2028. The figure applies to corporate banking as a whole. Reuters did not report a separate revenue, client or asset target for crypto custody, so the growth target cannot be read as a forecast for this service.

What custody mechanics has Deutsche Bank disclosed?

The report confirms a phased product plan, but does not describe how Deutsche Bank will secure or administer the assets. It gives no detail on private-key control, signing arrangements, wallet architecture, asset segregation, reconciliation or recovery if access to a key is lost. Those are material operational questions for institutional custody, and the launch announcement does not answer them.

The confirmed scope is narrower: a German launch in the coming weeks, initial custody for bitcoin and ether, a later phase supporting movement into and out of mainstream stablecoins, and a planned expansion into Asian financial centres next year. The service’s technical design, named stablecoins and specific Asian destinations remain undisclosed in the Reuters report.
